Accessibility

This site is meant to be usable by every Muslim student at Salford, and that includes disabled students. If any part of it gets in your way, we want to know.

What we’ve built in

• Aiming at WCAG 2.1 AA throughout.
• A skip-to-content link, and every interactive element reachable and operable by keyboard with a visible focus outline.
• The timetable is a real HTML table with proper row and column headers, so a screen reader can navigate it rather than reading a wall of numbers.
• The countdown updates silently for screen readers; an equivalent static sentence is announced instead, so it doesn’t interrupt you every second.
• Light and dark themes, both designed rather than inverted, following your device by default with a manual override.
• Colour never carries meaning on its own. A prayer that has passed is struck through and greyed to a shade that still meets the contrast minimum, so it reads as past whether or not you see the colour.
• Animation stays minimal, and stops altogether if your device asks for reduced motion.
• Touch targets are at least 44×44 px, because this gets used one-handed while walking.
• Text scales and reflows to 200% without breaking, and the page never scrolls sideways.

What we know isn’t perfect

• The full-month timetable scrolls sideways inside its own box on narrow screens. Thirty days of times will not fit a phone, and we have not found an honest way around that. There is a line above it saying so, today’s times fit without scrolling, and that is what most people came for.
• Step-free access details for some prayer rooms haven’t been verified in person yet. We would rather leave those blank than guess.
• No disabled student has tested this yet. We would like one to. Get in touch if you would help.
• The month calendar on What’s On shows each event as a coloured bar on a phone rather than its name, because the names do not fit a 44 px cell. The names are still read out, and the list underneath the calendar carries them in full.
